Etymology: Upmixing is a modern audio-engineering term, built on a pattern that is easy to trace. It is an "up-" prefix attached to "mix," the sense that is the reverse of "downmix," a word for folding several sound channels down into fewer ones, such as turning a surround soundtrack into stereo. An upmix does the opposite: it takes a narrower recording and spreads its sound across more channels to create a wider, more spacious result. The word therefore depends on "downmix" coming first. Sound engineers needed a name for the reduction process, and "upmix" followed as its counterpart. Because the terms belong to recording studios and home theatre, they appear mainly in technical discussions of surround sound rather than in everyday speech.
