Upmix

Part of speech: verb, noun

Definitions

  1. To convert a stereo or lower-channel audio signal into a multichannel format, enhancing spatial sound distribution and immersive listening experience
  2. The process of transforming audio with fewer channels into one that supports multiple audio channels, providing a richer and more dynamic sound environment
  3. A method for increasing the number of audio channels from a source containing limited channels, allowing for surround sound effects and improved audio depth

Etymology: "Upmix" is a plain compound of the prefix "up-" and "mix," and it was formed on the model of "downmix." The older word, which describes reducing a multichannel recording to fewer channels (such as folding a surround soundtrack into stereo), came first. Engineers then needed the reverse operation, expanding a two-channel or mono signal into several speakers' worth of sound, and "upmix" was built by simply attaching "up-" to the existing term. The logic is the same as in the pairs "upgrade" and "downgrade" or "upload" and "download," where the directional prefix marks the direction of conversion. The word's meaning therefore comes straight from its parts: to mix a signal upward in channel count. Its sense has stayed stable since it was coined, so there is no older meaning to trace.
