Etymology: "Uplighting" is simply the noun form of "uplight," which joins the prefix "up-" to "light," producing a plain description of lighting that shines upward from the floor or a low fixture. Its roots are ordinary English words, so the construction is transparent rather than borrowed or coined from a classical language. The verb "uplight" belongs to a family of similar formations across the Germanic languages. Dutch "oplichten" and German "aufleuchten" both mean "to illuminate," and West Frisian and Low German have close equivalents, showing that the idea of light rising or being brought up to shine on something is widely shared among these neighbouring tongues. English simply combined its own "up" and "light" to express the same notion.
