Etymology: "Updation" is a plain English formation: the noun "update" with the suffix "-ion" attached. The suffix itself has a long pedigree, having come into English through Old French "-ation" and Latin "-ātiō", which in turn grew from older Italic and Indo-European elements meaning roughly "the act or process of." That suffix is what turns a verb into a noun naming an action, so "updation" literally means the act of updating. The base word "update" is the more recent of the two parts, and it is the one that carries the modern sense. Its use as a noun for a revised version of software or information came later than its general sense of bringing something up to date. The "-ion" ending gave the process itself a name separate from the thing produced by it.
