Etymology: "Updates" is simply the plural of "update", a noun formed in English from the preposition-particle "up" and the noun "date". The compound is transparent: "date" in the sense of a point in time, so to update something is to bring it up to the date, the current moment. The verb sense of "date" as "to put a date on" or "to make current" gave rise to the notion of making something up-to-date. The compound first appears around 1948, a late arrival for a word that now seems so ordinary. Its spread into computing and software in later decades is what made the plural familiar, as software and devices now receive a steady stream of them.
