Etymology: "Upcurved" is a plain compound: the prefix "up-" joined to "curved," the past participle of "curve." The "up-" element means upward, so the combined form describes something bent or arched in an upward direction. "Curve" itself came into English from Latin "curvus," meaning bent or crooked, and the same root gives us "curb" and "curvet." Since "curved" is already a complete description of a bent shape, adding "up-" simply narrows the bend to a rising arc, as in a gently rounded ridge or the raised edge of a boat's hull.
