Etymology: "Upcome" is a compound of the prepositional prefix "up" and "come," and its roots go back to the Germanic languages spoken before English existed. Its ancestor was Old English "ūpcuman," meaning "to come up, arise," which was built from the same pieces that appear in modern German "aufkommen" and Dutch "opkomen," both still meaning something close to "to come up" or "to arise." The noun sense, an approaching future event, is a later development. The verb's basic sense of rising or emerging into view shifted over the centuries toward the idea of something arriving, and the noun grew out of that sense of something coming forward in time. Each part of the word stays transparent: "up" for emergence, "come" for arrival, so the noun simply names what is about to rise into view.
