Etymology: "Upcasts" is the plural of "upcast," a noun for an action in which something is thrown or raised from a lower point to a higher one. The word is built from two plain English parts: the adverb "up," meaning toward a higher place, and "cast," meaning to throw or fling. "Cast" itself traces back through Old Norse "kasta," a term with roots in the sense of throwing, which entered English as a verb and gave us the many senses of "cast" we know today. The compound "upcast" first appeared in Middle English as the verb "upcasten," formed in the same way: "up" added to "casten" to mean to throw upward. Its noun use came later, once speakers needed a single word for the act of throwing something up as a thing in itself.
