Upberinge
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- An archaic term for the act of lifting something up or holding it aloft
- Old-fashioned word describing the action of raising or supporting an object upward
- Archaic noun meaning the lifting or bearing of something into a higher position
Etymology: The word is built from "up" and "beringe," a Middle English verbal noun formed from "beren," meaning to carry, lift, or hold up. It is the same root that gives modern English "bear" in its older sense of carrying a load, so the word literally names the act of bearing something upward. "Upberen" and its noun forms belonged to a family of compounds in which "up" intensifies or directs the action of a verb, as in "uphold" and "upraise." Medieval English writers used such forms freely, and "upberinge" was one of several ways to name a lifting motion. Its spelling varied across manuscripts, and it has since dropped out of common use, replaced by "lifting" and "raising."
