Unsupport

Part of speech: verb

Definitions

  1. To fail to provide backing, aid, or endorsement for something or someone
  2. To withdraw or withhold support from a person, cause, or initiative
  3. To refuse assistance or endorsement to something that requires or expects it

Etymology: "Support" passed into English from Old French "supporter," which came from Latin "supportare," meaning to carry, bring, or endure. The Latin is built from "sub" ("under") and "portare" ("to carry"), so the original picture is of bearing a weight from below. The sense of holding someone up or backing them came later. "Un-" is the English prefix that reverses an action, so "unsupport" means to withdraw that backing: to take away help, assistance, or endorsement from someone or something. It is a regular English formation, a productive prefix added to an existing verb, and it is far less common than its adjective "unsupported."
