Unserpentinized
Part of speech: adjective
Definitions
- Describing rock or mineral material that has not undergone the process of serpentinization, meaning it remains in its original, unaffected geological state without transformation by hydration and metamorphism
- Characterizing geological substances that have not experienced chemical alteration to form serpentine minerals, indicating preservation of their primary mineral composition and texture rather than conversion to serpentine-rich material
- Referring to rock formations or mineral assemblages that have retained their initial properties without being altered by the serpentinization process, thus lacking the typical changes induced by interaction with water and heat in geological environments
Etymology: Serpentine takes its name from its greenish, mottled colour, which was compared to a snake's skin, so "serpentine" the rock is named for the animal's markings rather than the animal itself. The word "unserpentinized" is simply that mineral name with two additions: the prefix "un-", meaning "not", and the suffix "-ize", which turns a noun into a verb meaning "to convert into," followed by the past-participle ending "-ed." Put together, it describes rock that never underwent the chemical change that turns its original minerals into serpentine. The sense of the word is therefore a negative one, defined by a process that did not happen. Geologists use it for peridotites and other ultramafic rocks, where the presence or absence of serpentinization tells them how much water has reacted with the rock and how much of its original olivine and pyroxene survives.
