Etymology: "Unrestrain" is simply the English prefix "un-" attached to "restrain," meaning to release something from restraint, limits or control. The "un-" prefix, from Old English, reverses or removes the action of the base verb, so the word means the undoing of restraining. "Restrain" itself comes from Old French "restreindre," which came from Latin "restringere," meaning to draw back tightly or bind fast. The Latin root combines "re-" (back) with "stringere" (to draw tight), the same stringere behind "strict" and "stringent." Restraining is therefore literally a drawing tight, and unrestraining is the loosening of that tie.
