Etymology: "Unreceptively" is simply "unreceptive" with the adverbial ending "-ly" attached. "Unreceptive" itself is built from "un-", a prefix meaning "not", and "receptive", which comes from "receive" with the adjective-forming suffix "-ive". The "receptive" side of the word therefore carries the idea of taking something in, so the whole word describes a manner of not taking in or accepting what is offered, such as ideas, suggestions or criticism. Used of people or minds, "unreceptively" describes a response that shuts out a new proposal or argument rather than weighing it. Because the word is a regular combination of familiar parts, its meaning can be worked out from its pieces, which is why it needs no special history of its own.
