Etymology: "Unmixed" is about as transparent as English compounds get: the prefix "un-", meaning "not", attached to "mixed," the past participle of "mix." Its prefix traces back through Old English "un-" to a Proto-Germanic form, and ultimately to a Proto-Indo-European negative particle, the same ancestor that gave English words like "not" and "non-" their negating sense. The construction is simple and productive. English has long been able to take "un-" in front of participles and adjectives to produce a negated state, so "unmixed" follows the same pattern as "unopened," "unbroken" or "unfinished." Its meaning, "free from additives," is a direct reading of that combination: the substance has not had anything blended into it.
