Etymology: "Unlisted" is the past form of the verb "unlist," so the adjective describes something that was never placed on a list or has been taken off one. The prefix "un-" is an old Germanic element, inherited through Old English, that reverses the sense of the word it attaches to. The base word "list" has a more physical beginning. Old English "līste" meant a border or edge, and the word passed into Old French as "liste" and into Medieval Latin as "lista," still with that sense of a strip or border. Middle English "lī̆st" and then English "list" took on the meaning of a roll of names or items, most likely because such rolls were written on strips of material.
