Etymology: "Unleadeds" is simply the plural of "unleaded", the noun for petrol or gasoline that contains no lead additive. Its history lies in the word it is built on: "leaded" is the past participle of "lead", and "un-" is the familiar English prefix meaning "not", so the adjective "unleaded" names fuel without lead, and the plural noun is the name for grades of such fuel sold as separate products. The US standard of identity for unleaded gasoline is set out in federal regulation, 40 CFR ยง79.32, which defines the fuel for regulatory purposes. Because the fuel is sold in several grades, speakers naturally pluralize the noun when comparing them, as in "the unleadeds at this station are cheaper than the premium."
