Etymology: "Unexpressively" is an adverb built from "unexpressive" and the adverbial suffix "-ly". The base word "unexpressive" combines the prefix "un-", meaning "not", with "expressive," which comes from the Latin "exprimere," literally "to press out." That Latin verb is itself built from "ex-" ("out") and "premere" ("to press"), so the root image is of something squeezed out of a person, such as a feeling pressed into the open. The suffix "-ly" turns the adjective into an adverb describing how an action is done. So "unexpressively" describes a manner: a line delivered with a flat voice, or a face that gives nothing away. The word therefore carries the same pressing-out metaphor as its root, but in negative form: nothing has been pressed out at all.
