Unenthusiast

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. Someone who lacks eagerness or excitement about a particular activity, interest or cause
  2. A person who does not share the zeal or keen interest that others show toward something
  3. One who is unmoved or lukewarm about a given pursuit, hobby or idea and does not get caught up in it

Etymology: The Greek "entheos" meant "having a god within," and "enthousiazein" meant to be seized by a deity. English "enthusiasm" kept that sense for a long time. It described religious zealots who claimed direct inspiration from God, and it was often used as an insult, implying madness. The modern meaning of keen eagerness came later, so the older sense still lies behind it. "Unenthusiast" is simply the English prefix "un-" attached to "enthusiast," meaning a person who lacks that eagerness. It is a transparent formation built from two established parts, not a word with a separate history of its own.
