Etymology: "Unengraved" is a plain formation: the prefix "un-", meaning "not," attached to "engraved," the past participle of "engrave." The prefix is a native English element, used since Old English to reverse or negate a quality, so the word needs no foreign detour to explain it. The base verb "engrave" comes from "en-," meaning "in" or "into," combined with "grave," meaning to cut or carve. Its sense of cutting lines into a hard surface, such as metal or stone, is the literal core that the participle keeps. Something unengraved is therefore a surface that has not had such lines cut into it, whether a blank plate, an uninscribed stone, or an unmarked ring. The negative form is most useful where a reader expects marks and finds none, as with a headstone or a wedding band. Because it is built from transparent parts, its meaning can be worked out from the pieces alone.
