Undislocated

Part of speech: adjective

Definitions

  1. Describing a bone, joint or body part that has remained in its proper place and has not been knocked out of alignment
  2. Not having been moved from its correct position, especially a joint that has not been pulled out of its socket
  3. Left intact in its normal anatomical position, without any displacement of a joint or bone from its socket

Etymology: "Undislocated" is simply the negative of "dislocated": the prefix "un-", meaning "not", attached to the adjective "dislocated," which describes a joint or bone that has been forced out of its normal position. The result is an adjective meaning "still in place," used most often of a joint, bone, or other body part that has not been wrenched out of its socket. The base word "dislocated" comes from "dislocate," formed from the prefix "dis-" ("apart, away") and the verb "locate," which in turn comes from Latin "locare," "to place." So the whole chain reads roughly as "not put out of place": "locare" gave "locate," which gained "dis-" to mean "put out of place," and "un-" then reverses that state.
