Undialysed

Part of speech: adjective

Definitions

  1. Describing a substance or fluid that has not undergone the process of dialysis to remove small molecules and impurities
  2. Referring to a solution or material that remains untreated by filtration through a semipermeable membrane to separate unwanted components
  3. Characterizing any liquid or mixture that retains dissolved solutes because it has not been subjected to the purification method known as dialysis

Etymology: "Undialysed" is simply the English prefix "un-" (meaning "not") attached to "dialysed," the British spelling of "dialyzed," the past participle of "dialyse," meaning to separate substances by dialysis. The compound is a straightforward piece of technical English, built on the older scientific term rather than descending from any earlier independent word. The base term "dialysis" comes from Greek "dialusis," meaning "separation" or "dissolution," formed from "dia-" (through, apart) and "lyein" (to loosen). It was adopted into English as a scientific term in the nineteenth century, when the chemist Thomas Graham described the process of separating crystalloids from colloids by diffusion through a membrane. "Dialyse" was then formed as a verb from that noun, and the participle "dialysed" followed from it. Adding "un-" to a past participle creates an adjective meaning "not subjected to the action described," which is exactly the sense here: a liquid that has not been dialysed still contains the dissolved substances that dialysis would have removed.
