Etymology: "Underrespond" is a plain compound: the prefix "under-," meaning too little or not enough, attached to "respond," which comes from Latin "respondere," "to answer" or "to reply." Put together, the word describes answering too weakly for what a situation or question actually demanded, so the stress falls on the quantity or adequacy of the reply rather than on whether one was given at all. The pattern is productive in English. "Under-" pairs with many verbs to mark a shortfall, as in "underestimate," "undercook," or "underperform," and "underrespond" follows that model directly. Its meaning is therefore easy to read from its parts, and the word is best understood as a transparent formation built on a familiar prefix rather than an older term with a separate history.
