Underrecognizing
Part of speech: verb
Definitions
- Failing to adequately acknowledge or identify the existence, value, or importance of something or someone; providing insufficient recognition or appreciation for achievements or qualities
- Not giving enough credit or attention to a person, idea, or fact; overlooking or minimizing the significance or contribution of an individual or concept
- Neglecting to properly recognize or validate contributions, accomplishments, or characteristics; underappreciating or disregarding the relevance or impact of someone or something
Etymology: The word is a plain formation: the prefix "under-" joined to "recognize". "Under-" is an Old English element meaning "beneath" or, in verb compounds, "too little" or "insufficiently", so "underrecognizing" describes recognizing something to a lesser degree than it deserves. "Recognize" has a longer road into English. It traces back through Old French "reconoistre" and Latin "recognoscere", built from "re-" ("again") and "cognoscere" ("to know"), and it arrived in English in the Middle English period. Its sense of identifying someone you already know is older than its later sense of acknowledging a contribution or achievement, and the second sense is the one "underrecognizing" leans on: to fail to credit someone for work they have done.
