Underpublish

Part of speech: verb

Definitions

  1. To fail to publish enough material, or to release fewer works than would be expected or desirable
  2. To issue too few printed or electronic works, leaving a body of writing or research less widely available
  3. To make public an insufficient quantity of books, papers, or other material for a given audience or purpose

Etymology: Under- is one of English's most productive prefixes, and attaching it to a verb usually means "not enough" or "below the proper level," as in "undercook" or "underestimate." Here it joins "publish," which came into Middle English from Old French "publier," itself from Latin "publicare," meaning "to make public." The combination is a transparent formation: to underpublish is to issue fewer copies or titles than would be expected or desirable. Its exact first recorded use is not something I can confirm, so the formation is best understood as a regular English compound built from two parts whose meanings are already clear.
