Etymology: "Perform" entered English from Old French "parfournir," meaning to furnish or complete thoroughly. The prefix "par-" intensified the sense, so the original idea was finishing a job fully rather than putting on a show. The theatrical meaning developed later. "Under-" is one of English's oldest prefixes. Besides meaning "beneath," it can mean "insufficiently," as in "underfed" or "undercooked." Attached to "perform," it describes doing a task less well than expected, following the same pattern as "underestimate" and "undervalue," where the prefix signals falling short rather than a literal position.
