Etymology: "Underneathen" is an older variant of "underneath," built from "under" and "neathen," a form of "neath" that is itself a shortened form of "beneath." The "-en" ending is a relic of an older pattern in which many adverbs and prepositions took a final "-en," so the form reads as an earlier, more worn-down version of the standard word. "Neath" descends from Old English "neoþan," meaning "from below," and "beneath" is a related formation with the prefix "be-." English speakers then stacked "under" in front of the already locative "neath," producing a doubled sense of "below below." The compound was redundant in a way that rarely bothered speakers, and it survives in standard English as "underneath." The dated variant with "-en" shows a stage of that same word-building before the spelling and pronunciation settled.
