Undermaintain
Part of speech: verb
Definitions
- To neglect or fail to keep something in good condition through proper maintenance
- To provide insufficient upkeep or care, resulting in deterioration or poor condition
- To allow something to decline by not performing necessary repairs and regular maintenance
Etymology: "Undermaintain" is a plain compound: the prefix "under-", meaning insufficiently or below the proper level, attached to "maintain". The verb "maintain" itself came into English from Old French "maintenir", which traces back to Latin "manu tenere", literally "to hold in the hand." That physical sense of holding something up or keeping it in hand is what gives the root its force here: to maintain a building or a road is to keep it held up against decay. Put "under-" in front and the meaning follows directly. To undermaintain something is to hold it up too loosely, giving it less care than it needs, so it slides into disrepair. The word is most often applied to equipment, property, and infrastructure, where the gap between proper upkeep and too little upkeep shows up as wear, breakdown, and damage over time.
