Underlips

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. The lower lip of the mouth, the fleshy border on the bottom edge of the opening between the jaws
  2. The fleshy lower border of the mouth that a person uses to speak, eat and kiss
  3. Part of the face forming the lower edge of the mouth, below the upper lip and above the chin

Etymology: "Underlips" is simply the plural of "underlip", the lower lip of the mouth. The singular is a plain compound of "under" and "lip", the two parts meaning just what they appear to mean. German has the same construction in "Unterlippe", and the Frisian "Unnerlippe" is a close relative, so the pattern is shared across the related Germanic languages rather than being an English invention.
