Etymology: "Improve" carries the more surprising history. It comes from Anglo-Norman "emprouwer," built from "en" plus "prou," meaning "profit," so its earliest sense was closer to turning land or money to good account than to making something better in general. The sense of general betterment developed later. "Under-" is an Old English prefix meaning "too little" or "below what is needed," as in "undercook" and "underestimate." Attached to "improve," it means to improve insufficiently. The formation is transparent, so the whole word's history is simply that of its two parts.
Synonyms: neglect improvement, fail to improve, decline, stagnate
Antonyms: improve, enhance, upgrade, advance, develop
