Etymology: "Under" comes from Old English "under," meaning beneath or below, and it gives this compound its sense of position: the thing doing the controlling sits beneath the process it governs. "Control" arrived from Anglo-French "contreroller," which meant a checker who kept a duplicate record of accounts, from "contre-rolle," a counter-roll. The original job was verification, not command. The modern sense of directing or governing grew out of that accounting role. Someone who checked a record against an original could also oversee the thing being recorded, and the verb widened from checking to steering. Joining it to "under" produces a word for control exercised from below or out of sight, which fits the definition's stress on a lower or less obvious vantage point.
