Etymology: "Unbegunnen" is an archaic English word, formed from the prefix "un-" (meaning "not") and "begunnen," the past participle of the Old English verb "beginnan," meaning "to begin." Its roots reach back to Germanic, and the same verb gave us the modern "begin." The participle "begunnen" survives in Middle and early Modern English, where "begun" and "begunnen" were both used as past participles of "begin." The "-en" ending was a common participle marker in older English, which is why forms like "begunnen" existed alongside "begun." Adding "un-" produced a word meaning "not yet begun," a sense that English speakers have rarely needed to spell out, so the term never became common.
