Etymology: The word is built from "un-", the Old English prefix meaning "not," attached to "begunne," an old past participle of "begin." Its ancestor in Old English was "beginnan," a verb formed from "be-" and "ginnan," meaning "to make a start." Attaching "un-" to a past participle turned it into an adjective: a thing that has been started is "begun," and a thing that has not is "unbegun." Its spelling with a final "-e" and double "n" reflects the Middle English period, when many participles still took endings like that. The word is now obsolete. Modern English uses "unbegun" or, more often, phrases such as "not yet begun" or "not yet started," and the older form survives mainly in dictionaries and historical texts.
