Etymology: "Unactual" is a plain English formation: the prefix "un-" joined to "actual." The prefix is one of the oldest and most productive in English, meaning "not" or "the reverse of," and it has been attached to native and Latinate adjectives alike. "Actual" itself comes from Late Latin "actualis," "active," from Latin "actus," "a doing," the past participle stem of "agere," "to do." Its sense of "existing in fact, real" developed in English, so "unactual" is essentially "not real or not existing in fact."
