Etymology: "Ultrafashionable" is a plain compound: the prefix "ultra-", from Latin "ultra" meaning "beyond", attached to "fashionable". The prefix "ultra-" was used in English from the 19th century, initially in politics, where "ultra" described people who went beyond the moderate position, before spreading to general use for "extremely" or "beyond the limits of" something. "Fashionable" comes from "fashion," which traces back through Old French "façon" to Latin "factio," meaning a making or doing. So the original idea behind fashion was simply the shape or manner in which something was made, and only later came to mean the prevailing style of dress and behaviour. Adding "ultra-" to "fashionable" intensifies that sense to mean being at the very leading edge of what is currently in vogue.
