  2. A administrative county located in the western part of Northern Ireland ; a male given name derived from Irish Gaelic roots
  3. A historic county in the west of Northern Ireland ; a man's first name of Irish origin, popular in the United States

Etymology: Lowercase "tyrone" is a decapitalization of the male given name Tyrone, a name that became especially prominent among African-Americans. Dropping the capital letter turns a personal name into a common word. The other strand of the word's history runs back to Rome. English borrowed it from Italian "tirone", which came from Latin "tiro", meaning a beginner or novice, a young apprentice, or a recruit in the Roman army. The same Latin source gave English "tyro", so the two words are close relatives.
