Etymology: "Typer" is about as plain as English word-building gets: it takes "type," the verb meaning to produce text with keys or a machine, and adds the suffix "-er," which marks a person or thing that performs the action. A typer is therefore one who types, and the same ending gives us "writer," "driver," and "printer." The verb "type" itself comes from the Latin "typus," a model or impression, which in turn came from Greek "typos," a blow or mark left by a blow. The sense of pressing a mark onto a surface eventually narrowed to the pressing of keys on a machine. The noun formed here follows that line, so the person who strikes the keys and the machine that does the striking both carry the name.
