Definitions

  1. An archaic spelling of a strong cord or thread made of twisted fibres ; to wind or twist several strands together into one length
  2. An old form of a thin, strong string made from twisted fibres ; to coil or braid separate strands so they form a single piece
  3. A dated variant denoting a cord of twisted threads ; a verb meaning to intertwine several strands into one united length

Etymology: "Twine" as a verb meaning to twist strands together is an Old English word, "twinan," which is related to "twin" in the sense of two things joined or doubled together. The original idea is of a pair: the twisted strand is literally two threads made into one, which is why "twin" and "twine" share a root in the notion of two-ness. The noun "twine," for the twisted cord itself, came into use later and grew out of the verb. Its meaning drifted from the act of twisting to the thin string that results, so a ball of garden string or a length of cord in a kitchen drawer is the verb's product made concrete.
