Etymology: The element known as tungsten derives its name from the Swedish words "tung sten," which translate literally to "heavy stone." This name was given in the 18th century by Swedish chemists who were investigating minerals containing a dense, heavy metal. The term captured the striking physical property of the metal's ores, which were notably heavier than most other stones encountered. The story of tungsten’s discovery is tied to the mineral wolframite, from which the metal is extracted. Early chemists noticed that when they processed wolframite, the residue left behind was a heavy, dense substance unlike anything they had seen before. Although the metal itself was not isolated until later, the term "tung sten" was already in use to describe these heavy mineral deposits. The modern English name "tungsten" evolved from this Swedish root, maintaining the original meaning of "heavy stone." The metal was officially recognized and isolated in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with Carl Wilhelm Scheele, Peter Wilhelm Hjelm, and subsequently the Elhuyar brothers contributing to its discovery and purification. The name stuck because of its descriptive accuracy and the distinctiveness of the metal’s density. Interestingly, the element also carries the symbol "W" on the periodic table, reflecting its German name, "Wolfram," which comes from the mineral wolframite.
