Trud
Part of speech: verb, noun
Definitions
- A feminine first name of German and Scandinavian origin, sometimes a short form of Gertrude
- A female personal name common in German and Scandinavian countries, often a short form of Gertrud
- Used as a woman's first name with Germanic and Norse roots, typically shortened from Gertrude or similar names
Etymology: Trud is a short form of Gertrude, a Germanic name built from two elements: "ger," meaning spear, and "trud," meaning strength. Gertrude came into use across German-speaking lands in the early Middle Ages, and its meaning was spelled out in the name itself: a spear-strong woman. The same "trud" element appears in Norse mythology as Þrúðr, a goddess whose name is related to the Old Norse word for strength or might. That root shows up in Scandinavian and Old English names, but the form that lasted into modern English is the affectionate one. Trudy and Trudi are later pet forms of Gertrude, and "Trud" on its own is a less common variant still used as a given name.
