Etymology: Nikolai Trubetzkoy came from an old Russian princely family, so the name is an aristocratic surname rather than a coined term. The Russian form is Trubetskoy, and the "-skoy" ending is typical of noble family names, which were often derived from the places a princely line held. He is best known as one of the founders of phonology, the study of which sounds a language uses to distinguish meanings. Working with Roman Jakobson in the Prague Linguistic Circle, he argued that speech sounds should be analysed by their function within a system, not only by their physical properties. His method of defining a sound by the contrasts it makes with others became a central tool of structural linguistics.
