Definitions

  1. An ancient city on the Peloponnese peninsula in Greece, known in myth as the place where the hero Theseus was raised
  2. A classical settlement in the Argolid region of southern Greece, associated with legends of Theseus and Hippolytus
  3. Ancient Greek town in the Argolis district of the Peloponnese, celebrated in legend and later a site of temple ruins

Etymology: Troezen was an ancient city on the Saronic Gulf, on the Peloponnese coast of Greece, and its name reached English by way of Latin. The Latin form "Troezēn" was adopted from Ancient Greek "Τροιζήν" (Troizḗn), the name of that city. Because the Latin spelling was taken over directly, English kept the classical place-name in its original shape rather than adapting it through French or Old English, which is why the word looks so unlike the everyday English words that came through those routes.
