Transspecific
Part of speech: adjective
Definitions
- Extending across or applying to multiple different species rather than being limited to a single one
- Involving or concerning more than one species at the same time or in relation to each other
- Shared by or occurring among various species rather than being specific to any individual species
Etymology: "Transspecific" is a plain compound: the prefix "trans-", meaning "across" or "beyond", joined to "specific" in its biological sense of belonging to a particular species. Together they describe something that crosses or spans species boundaries, such as a gene, pathogen, or trait that appears in more than one species. The prefix does most of the work here. "Trans-" comes from Latin, where it meant "across, over, beyond" and turns up in many English formations like "transatlantic" and "transfer." Attaching it to "specific" produces a term that describes a phenomenon, not a thing: a shared feature that moves between or persists across species lines.
