The base word itself came into English from Italian "trampolino," a springboard or leaping frame, which in turn came from the Italian verb "trampolare," to prance or bounce. That Italian root connects it to the sense of stamping or treading that also lies behind the German "trampeln," to trample. The suffix has a longer road. "-er" descends from Old English "-ere," which signalled a person who does or works at something, and it had earlier roots in Latin "-arius" and Old French "-ier." English simply attached it to "trampoline" once the apparatus and its sport had become familiar, so the word needed no special coinage: a trampoline performer naturally became a trampoliner.
