Etymology: "Tradescant" is not a verb but a surname, borne by a father and son who were gardeners and plant collectors. John Tradescant the Elder served the Duke of Buckingham and gathered plants and curiosities from abroad, and his son, John Tradescant the Younger, continued the work. Their collection was known as the Tradescant Ark. After the younger Tradescant's death, the collection passed to Elias Ashmole, who gave it to the University of Oxford. It became the foundation of the Ashmolean Museum, so the family's name survives in the institution's history.
