Tourettic
Part of speech: adjective
Definitions
- Relating to or characteristic of Tourette syndrome, a neurological condition marked by involuntary tics and sudden vocal outbursts
- Describing something connected with the neurological disorder that causes repeated involuntary movements and uncontrolled noises
- Of or pertaining to the condition known as Tourette syndrome, which involves sudden repetitive tics and involuntary sounds
Etymology: Tourettic is a plain formation: it is built from "Tourette syndrome" with the adjective-forming suffix "-ic" added to the end. The syndrome itself is named after the French physician Georges Gilles de la Tourette, who described the condition in 1885, and the word simply carries that name into adjective form. "Tourettic" therefore means relating to, or affected by, Tourette syndrome, in the same way "autistic" or "diabetic" are built from the names or terms of conditions.
