Etymology: The ending "-er" is much older than the word it sits on. It descends from Latin "-ārius", a suffix that marked a person connected with a role or trade. Early Germanic speakers borrowed it, and it reached Old English as "-ere", so English had its own version of the ending long before the Norman period. Old French "-ier" reinforced it, and Middle English settled on the form we use now. "Torch" is the base, and the English compound simply attaches the agent ending to it, so the word was formed inside English rather than inherited as a whole.
