Toolbelt

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A strap or pouch worn around the waist to hold and carry hand tools within easy reach while working
  2. A worn belt fitted with pockets, loops or holsters so that a worker can keep tools close at hand
  3. Wearable waist gear with compartments for tools, used by tradespeople and handymen on the job

Etymology: A toolbelt is about as plain a compound as English offers: a belt, worn around the waist, for carrying tools. The two halves are older than the combination, and the word simply joins them without any change in sense or spelling. Its meaning stays close to its parts, which is why it needs little explaining. The more interesting part is how the pattern works. English builds many compounds this way, placing one noun in front of another to name a specific kind of the second thing: a "tool" belt, like a "seat" belt or a "life" belt. The first noun narrows the second, so the belt is understood by its function rather than by any special material or form.
