Etymology: The farewell is an offshoot of the older verb "toddle," meaning to walk with short, unhurried steps, which goes back to the 1500s. "Toodle" seems to have grown out of that sense of easy, wandering movement, perhaps blended with "tootle," a word for playing or moving along on a wind instrument or vehicle. Its exact path is uncertain, and it is not clear which of those influences mattered most. As a parting phrase, "toodle-oo" and "toodle-pip" appear in English speech in the early twentieth century, and they carried a cheerful, slightly old-fashioned tone. The verb form, as in "toodle off" or "toodle around," keeps the sense of setting off in a leisurely way.
