Etymology: "Tinseling" is the present participle of "tinsel" used as a verb, meaning to decorate something with tinsel. The base word traces back to Old French "estincele," a spark, which came from Latin "scintilla," also meaning spark. That makes it a close relative of "scintillate," the Latin root showing up in two very different English words. Tinsel first named the cloth rather than the decoration. Late medieval tinsel was a fabric woven or embroidered with gold or silver thread, prized for its glitter, and the word entered English in the late Middle Ages. The glittering strands used for festive decorations came much later, and the verb built from them is more recent still.
