Timesheet

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A record kept by an employee or contractor showing the hours worked over a period, usually for payroll purposes
  2. A sheet or log on which the time spent working on each day or task is written down so that wages can be calculated
  3. A document listing the working hours logged by a worker, typically submitted to an employer to determine pay

Etymology: A timesheet is about as plain as English compounds get: a sheet of paper (or now a digital record) on which hours worked are logged against a schedule. The two halves are the ordinary words "time" and "sheet," joined without any change in form. "Sheet" traces back to Old English "scēte," a word for a piece of cloth or a broad flat piece of material, which later widened to mean a flat layer of paper. The compound describes exactly what it is: a sheet recording time.

Synonyms: timecard, time record, attendance sheet
